Reviews and issues local auditee financial reports submitted by external CPAs, advises local governments on financial, operational, and compliance issues, and provides best practices and educational resources to local governments and those they serve.

What to expect working in Local Government Services

Local Government Advisors work with local governments to improve their financial and operational performance and comply with laws and regulations. They provide information to legislators to assist with policy and decision-making, conduct research, review audit reports from over 3,600 local governments annually, and respond to questions from local governments and the CPAs who audit them.

As a Local Government Advisor you can expect to read audit reports and work with local governments to identify and implement strategies to improve their financial position and operational effectiveness, in addition to resolving their compliance challenges. Local Government Advisors create educational resources, such as best practices and templates, and provide training to various groups, including the Center for Local Government Excellence, with the ultimate goal of improving governmental accounting and the quality of audits of local governments in Louisiana.

LLA requires applicants to have particular levels of education, experience, and certifications in order to qualify for a career in Local Government Services.

Staff Auditor Levels
Staff Auditor I
Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in accounting from an accredited college or university
  • Sufficient hours, or a written commitment to obtain the necessary hours, to take the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor examination in Louisiana
  • Baccalaureate degree (other than accounting) from an accredited college or university with sufficient hours to take the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor examination in Louisiana; or,
  • Possess certification as a Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor
OR
Staff Analyst I
Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in accounting from an accredited college or university
  • Sufficient hours, or a written commitment to obtain the necessary hours, to take the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor examination in Louisiana
  • Baccalaureate degree (other than accounting) from an accredited college or university with sufficient hours to take the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor examination in Louisiana; or,
  • Possess certification as a Certified Public Accountant
OR
Staff Analyst II
Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in accounting from an accredited college or university with sufficient hours, or a written commitment to obtain the necessary hours, to take the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor examination in Louisiana
  • Plus one year of professional level experience at a level equivalent to a Staff Analyst I
  • Baccalaureate degree (other than accounting) from an accredited college or university with sufficient hours to take the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor examination in Louisiana
  • Plus one year of professional level experience at a level equivalent to a Staff Advisor I; or,
  • Possess certification as a Certified Public Accountant
OR
Staff Auditor II
Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in accounting from an accredited college or university
  • Sufficient hours, or a written commitment to obtain the necessary hours, to take the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor examination in Louisiana
  • One year of professional level experience at a level equivalent to a Staff Advisor I required
  • Baccalaureate degree (other than accounting) from an accredited college or university with sufficient hours to take the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor examination in Louisiana
  • Plus one year of professional level experience at a level equivalent to a Staff Advisor I; or,
  • Possess certification as a Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor

Senior Auditor Levels
Senior Advisor I
Qualifications
  • Possess certification as a Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor
  • Plus one year of professional level experience, including one year at a level equivalent to a Staff Advisor II
Senior Analyst I
Qualifications
  • Possess certification as a Certified Public Accountant
  • Plus one year of professional level experience in auditing at a level equivalent to a Staff Analyst II
Senior Analyst II
Qualifications
  • Possess certification as a Certified Public Accountant
  • Plus two years of professional level experience, including one year at a level equivalent to a Senior Analyst I
Senior Advisor II
Qualifications
  • Possess certification as a Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor
  • Plus two years of professional level experience, including one year at a level equivalent to a Senior Advisor I
Educational Outreach Senior II
Qualifications
  • Possess certification as a Certified Public Accountant plus two years of professional level experience, including one year at a level equivalent to a Senior Auditor. Experience working in a local government is a plus.
